Residency programme in Brasil

São João Artists in Residency in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

The São João Residency Program is an independent project focused on intensive development of work, processes and experiences, based on the identification of shared interests and the establishment of partnerships between residents.

We organize a collective residency, for the duration of approximately four weeks, taking place annually in the main house of a 19th century historical farm, near the locality of São José do Vale do Rio Preto, in the countryside of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It is open for individuals and collectives acting in different areas and medias, who are interested in developing their work outside of the context of big cities. Besides the wide common area in the main house and plenty of outdoor spaces, ten residents will have at their disposal individual and collective studios to develop personal work and research. We also organize collective activities, such as workshops, presentations in various formats and open talks, both in the immediate context of the residency and in relation to the local community working in the artisanal coffee production.

The 3# edition of the residency will take place between September 8th and October 5th 2014. Until the starting date, we will be available to provide any necessary material that can attest the participation of the selected participants, in order to facilitate their applications for additional fundings.  We are constantly looking out for ways of financing our project through culture funds and supports, but for this edition we are still charging a participation fee of 950 Brazilian Reais (approximately 420 American Dollars or 310 Euros), which will be entirely used to cover the costs of the residents: local transportation, meals, laundry and accommodation.

Find below the conceptual framework of our Program:

– Heightened contact with nature and reduction of outside stimuli and demands, as well as living together with other residents, are some of the essential factors that contribute to the development and establishment of lines of thought and production. The immersive dynamic of the residency, reaffirmed by the lack of telephone signal and Internet connection, seeks to stimulate the establishment of new creative partnerships. This is also why the working processes matter more to us than the eventual final product.

– Through the selection process we will try to create a heterogeneous and multidisciplinary group, regarding personal practices as well as theoretical and conceptual approaches. This bet on the multiplicity of the group already works as a way of encouraging the dialogue between different practices, discourses and patterns and rhythms of work. In its two first editions, the Program welcomed individuals working in the most varied fields and artistic formats, such as drawing, painting, collage, video, photography, site-specific practices, as well as popular and contemporary music, literature, HQs, dance, research and curating. These residents came from countries such as: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, United States, France, Germany and Australia.

– The organizing group of the residency will be suggesting dynamics and procedures, encouraging critical discussions and creating conditions for dialogue and exchange of knowledge, always maintaining a horizontal relationship between the participants. We intend, in this way, to invest in the need of rethinking the relationship between critical research and artistic production today.

NEW: Aiming to extend the understanding of “culture” beyond the field of artistic production, we intend to integrate to the group of this 3# edition individuals working with ecological solutions in rural contexts, such as alternative agriculture techniques. Because we think that reconsidering our relationship to natural resources and developing alternative ways of production and consumption should be part of our aspirations, we are offering a full funding for one project in the field of agriculture (organic plantation, research in permaculture) and / or ecology (ecological education, research in botanic, etc.). So, if interested, please emphasize this option in the application form, presenting the viability of your project  for the duration of the residency.
